Numerous reports indicate a growing trend of employers requesting their employees to return to the office, with many offering the compromise and privilege of hybrid work schedules. I use the term "privilege" very deliberately here because it is a privilege. I am concerned that some employees are misusing this privilege, which is eroding trust between them and their employers.
As a long-time advocate for workplace flexibility and treating employees with respect and autonomy, I am disappointed to observe a rising trend and hear anecdotal evidence of employees not upholding their end of the hybrid work arrangement.
If you have the opportunity to work from home, treat that work time with the same seriousness and professionalism as if you were in the office. This means logging in on time, being prepared for virtual meetings, appearing on camera with a professional appearance, being available to your coworkers, and meeting work project deadlines. Do not use the fact that you are working from home as an excuse to neglect general business etiquette. I worry that if this behavior becomes prevalent, hybrid work options will diminish, and employers will have a solid business case to eliminate flexibility altogether.
Let’s work together toward the common goal of professionalism and a great work life balance. Want to talk more? Call me today 518-689-3138 or visit us at Alaant.com. Have a great day!
