What drives (motivates) you to achieve or strive for greatness every day?
I review and select my goals on a regular basis, and with intention. Selecting goals intentionally allows me to evaluate and understand my why. The “why” serves as my guiding light - it motivates me to always strive for greatness, even in the smallest of tasks.
Today, my goal is to help the community, especially women and underserved populations, in their journey with Alzheimer’s or other dementias. Alzheimer's is a women’s issue and a diversity issue. Not only are women more likely to have Alzheimer's, they are also more likely to be caregivers of those living with the disease. Black and Hispanic Americans are also disproportionally affected. They are more likely to develop Alzheimer’s, but less likely to be diagnosed.
My “why” is my Aunt Betty, who passed away from Alzheimer’s. She was like a grandmother to me, and I remember her fondly as a loving, funny, social butterfly, who always tried to help others. I miss her every day, but I honor her by working to raise awareness of Alzheimer’s disease and the services in our community that can help others.
Unfortunately, there is no cure, prevention or treatment to slow the progression of Alzheimer's disease and more than 6 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s today. This number is projected to rise to nearly 13 million by 2050. I know there is so much more to be done for Alzheimer’s, but every task I complete helps move the needle forward. Every dollar we raise helps fund research, educational programs, and care and support services to individuals with Alzheimer’s or dementia and their caregivers. Knowing that I can have a small part in helping another family’s journey with this disease, honors my Aunt and motivates me to always strive for greatness.
