Hi, I'm Miriam Dushane. Welcome to Glovebox Moments brought to you by HR in the Car.
So, Tom, today I want to talk about training. If an organization is going to go out on their journey of training, what would be some of the things that you might advise a company to look at and or do to make sure that it's meaningful training that's actually going to garner some type of results?
Well, I think the first thing you got to identify is what's the area of need? There's obviously going to be lots of things that people can get into, but if you look at the things that are going to be most impactful on a day-to-day basis, that's number one. What's my itinerary, what's my subject list? And pick the ones that you can impact in a specific window of time.
I like to think of smart goals specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, time-bound type of models for goal setting. Same kind of thing in training. You got to look at what can I accomplish to have the right audience? So you may have some folks that are earlier in their career and some folks that are later in their career or in that specific function. So I want to make sure the content is geared to them, that we've got some specific elements that relate to what they're doing on a day-to-day basis today, but things that can put into practice If you're not practicing things on a regular basis, it doesn't mean every minute of every day, but how do you get better? How do you learn? How do you grow? What's the best that you've got to provide and that's something that candidates are looking for these days is that element of learning and growth.
Professional development is super important for every employee in every organization, and I like the point where you said, it has to be something that you give them time to practice. Don't give them 15 things in one training session. Pick one, practice that. Then let's go back, have another session, let's add on to that, so you're building that foundation and then you're building the house up on top of it. Good starting points. Absolutely!
